Really Mr. Bassett?

Image
Greetings. Stephen Bassett is the face of the disclosure movement, and has been for decades, although Luis Elizondo has been taking the limelight away in recent years.  On December 30th, Mr. Stephen Bassett made the following statement on X, better known as Twitter, and I quote: "The answer to 'why another X-files reboot' is: from one end of the TV/Film/Streaming industry to the other, UAP related content projects are in the works because the content creators know what is coming - Disclosure."  Some questions immediately present themselves, inquiries that to my skeptical mind are logical and necessary.  1. How do Hollywood producers, content creators in the words of Mr. Bassett, know that disclosure is coming?  2. Do some Hollywood producers have access to information that is not available to the general public?  3. Why would the powers that be inform Hollywood producers about anything UFO related and secret in form?  4. How does Mr. Bassett know that the H...

Are All Witnesses Reliable Observers?

Image
Greetings. The scientific research community views witness testimonials as the weakest, least reliable form of information. Objective analysis bears that out, but how do witnesses measure up when it comes to the UFO problem?  People have been reporting unidentified flying objects for decades now, since at least the 1930's, if not a quite a bit earlier. Since the 1940's, witnesses have had the opportunity to file reports about their alleged events, usually with civilian groups and organizations. In that time, the majority of those UFO reports have escaped investigation, a sad result of the consistent lack of qualified field investigators, a problem experienced by every single group and organization. The situation has not changed to a substantial degree, and likely will always be a blemish on the UFO research community. As a result of this historical investigative shortcoming, it is difficult to extract any firm deductions about the available information on the UFO subject, but s...

An Interesting Observation, only Interesting Though.

Image
Greetings. What people around the world have attested to has changed quite a bit since the modern history of the UFO phenomenon began during World War II. Nobody knows exactly why, but it does make for some thoughtful consideration.  Many years ago, in Edinburg, Texas, I happened to come into the possession of a compact disc copy of "The Randle Report," a 1990's radio program out of El Paso, Texas, which was hosted by my friend Kevin D. Randle. The episode I received from Kevin featured an interview with the late Budd Hopkins, well known for his association with the abduction question. The interaction between Kevin and Mr. Hopkins was measured, at times playful, and often times, challenging. Kevin's skepticism concerning the abduction question came across clear as a Colorado sky, with Mr. Hopkins defending his own positions in a admirable manner. However, one single statement made by Mr. Hopkins stood out, and remains a point of interest for yours truly. I sincerely a...

Waiting with Bated Breath.

Image
Greetings. Disclosure? Many in the UFO subculture don't realize how long the wait has been, and how many declarations have been made concerning a potential disclosure event. The late Stanton T. Friedman once stated, and I quote: "Scientists and military men are about to 'lift the laughter curtain' and reveal that flying saucers are real." More on Mr. Friedman's statement at the conclusion of this writing.  Such promises have been offered to the public for decades now, some originating from dedicated authors and researchers of the UFO issue, some from people who have no interest in and no capability of attempting to research the problem in question. In decades past, people like Richard Hall and Donald Keyhoe, both having affiliation with NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena,) pushed for government transparency and hearings on the UFO issue, and were convinced that an overall cover-up of the UFO phenomenon was in place. Their efforts were...

Aliens, Flying Saucers, etc....

Image
Greetings. The mystery of unidentified flying objects has remained unanswered, despite the research efforts of many dedicated individuals. Could the answer be right in front of us? Could the answer be simpler than we think? Let's consider the possibilities.... Beginning with the U.S. military's initial forays into UFO investigations, just prior to the establishment of the U.S. Air Force's Project Sign, the powers that be have had a vested interest in the topic, even it they made strong efforts to keep such interests unknown to the prying eyes of the general public. As Project Sign became Project Grudge, eventually becoming the well-known Project Blue Book, investigative efforts continued, albeit with varying levels of legitimacy. As the names changed, the basic efforts did not change to any substantial degree, only the level of openness having any real variability.  On the civilian front, several organizations surfaced; Ground Saucer Watch, APRO (Aerial Phenomena Research O...

Some Accurate Assessments, and some Revealing Missteps.

Image
Greetings. "You may have a point, but it gets lost in your misanthropic tone and lack of any sources. You often attack people, but you never cite verifiable evidence. The subject of this current piece and many others is You. A summary of this piece could be ā€œeverybody elseā€™s work is bad, so look at me.ā€ Stop being a curmudgeon, and if you are going to smear people for clicks on your blog, include a works cited section." The words of one Robbie Manfredi, a gentleman who I have never heard of, nor interacted with. Despite that, I found his comment worthy of consideration and examination. Off we go....  Mr. Manfredi is of the opinion that I have a misanthropic tone to my writing. His assessment is accurate in many ways. I don't have a high tolerance for ignorance or unprofessional conduct, nor do I hold any punches back, no matter the subject of the particular blog posting. Mr. Manfredi is also of the opinion that I am a curmudgeon, an ill-tempered person. Agreed, I am certa...

A Nonexistent Threat, or an Attempt at Sensationalism?

Image
Greetings. The UFO topic has a lengthy mythology firmly attached to it; myths, legends, and stories that have become entrenched as established fact as the decades have gone by. How has this influenced the UFO subculture?  Two of today's best known UFO personalities, George Knapp and Jeremy Corbell, have become the spokespersons that most consistently tout the idea that UFOs are a threat to humanity. They push the belief during the course of every event they appear at, in every interview they conduct or participate in, and on their own highly produced program, all without a shred of tangible evidence to support their sensational claims. Now if Mr. Knapp or Mr. Corbell could produce some tangible evidence to support the alleged threat potentiality, then the idea would obviously become far more believable, far more defensible, so time will tell what the future holds. However, we can look at what historical information we do have which may, or may not, suggest such a threatening hypoth...

The Bottomless Well to UFO Notoriety.

Image
Greetings. The lure of fame and notoriety is a puissant influence in the UFO subculture. That is a well-established fact. The why question is self-explanatory, but the resulting waste is not often talked about. Let's talk then. Beginning with authors and researchers, why is the championing of a single case so often the chosen course of action for so many? Of course, I don't know the answer to that question, but I suspect that some authors and researchers look at particular cases as a springboard to UFO notoriety, as an opportunity to canoodle with other well-known people in the UFO subculture, and to get one's name on the UFO marquee. We see it all the time, lesser-known people taking selfies with UFO personalities, with the celebrities allowing their coattails to be ridden like a bad lover. Just take a cursory scan of social media and you will find a voluminous amount of such embarrassing content, selfies, selfies, and more selfies. Shameless self-promotion and attachment ...

A Contrary, Incongruous Point of Consideration.

Image
Greetings. The search for extraterrestrial life, and possible alien visitation continues, but is it a misdirected effort? Let's take a look at some less-than-popular possibilities.  The UFO phenomenon has been in the public's view since the end of World War II. Several flaps and waves have come and gone, some truly interesting cases have come to light, and a slew of theories have become entrenched in the minds of many, despite a scarcity of tangible proof to support them. Time travelers, extraterrestrials, multidimensional visitors, and a few lesser-known ideas have occupied a place on the discussion table, at least in the UFO subculture, but none of the aforesaid theories have been strongly bolstered by evidence.  To be sure, there are some historical UFO cases that do feature some physical evidence, but that evidence has simply confirmed that the described events actually took place, nothing more, and has not been proven after scientific scrutinization to be anything extraor...

The Magnificent Hitch.

Image
Greetings. "Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you." Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011) Christopher Eric Hitchens.  Born on the 13th of April in 1949 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, Hitchens attended Balliol College in Oxford and graduated in the early 1970's. His epistemological razor states, "What can be asserted without evidence, can also be dismissed without evidence." His razor is still embraced in the fields of philosophy and law prac...

Suppositions at Play, Backed by Numbers?

Image
Greetings. Green cows on the Moon. A physical reality? Obviously not.  The UFO subculture, and the general public, places a good deal of importance on sheer numbers. If a claim, or claims, are made often enough, over a long enough period of time, and by enough individuals, the claim in question is often taken as a confirmed fact, as reality. But is this a logical assumption to make?  Let's undertake an experiment. Let's suppose that thousands of people, over the course of several decades, have made a similar set of claims and declarations that are void of physical evidence that would definitively corroborate the claims. Let's also suppose that researchers have spent a huge amount of time examining the claims, and have believed many of the people, and their unsupported testimonials. Finally, let's assume that the claims have nothing to do with unidentified flying objects, but have everything to do with green cows, bovines on the Moon.  Should we believe the claims? Shoul...

Hypocritical Mudslinging.

Image
Greetings. Neil deGrasse Tyson. The gentleman is not the scientist of choice for the UFO subculture, and that is being kind.  Mr. Tyson is consistently the target of personal and hypocritical comments, opinions that speak volumes about the people casting them. A few of the most "interesting" are as follows, all gathered from a recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter: Kent Reynolds says "Tyson is a joke."  Dex says "I can't stand this dude."  āš”ļøum, what? says "NDT is an arrogant tool." The Last MoFaux says "Aliens will have to probe Tyson before he'll consider the evidence." Sasha says "I don't like his cocky attitude." jobojo says "is he still relevant? What are his scientific success's?" Mike Colangelo, the original poster, also points out that Mr. Tyson is promoting his 16th book.  Now I won't make any observations about the spelling, construction, and punctuation of the aforementioned comme...

Recycled Information, Worthy Endeavors.

Image
Greetings. As 2023 comes to a close, it makes sense to take an honest look at the previous calendar year.  On May 1st, an event allegedly took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Talk of aliens and a crashed UFO made the rounds for a few weeks, then the story disappeared as quickly as MUFON's own Jan Harzan after being arrested for sexual solicitation (allegedly.) Witnesses stopped talking. No physical evidence ever came to light. Nobody seemed to want to take the logical course of action and look for the alleged crash site. As it turns out, the entire scenario was a hoax, although some UFO "researchers" will likely keep the story alive, despite the total lack of evidence to support it. Shades of the Aztec, Aurora, Del Rio, and Maury Island hoaxes. Better call in Noe Torres, Ruben Uriarte, Daniel Alan Jones, or Scott and Suzanne Ramsey to the scene. There are hoaxes to promote and capitalize on. Once again disclosure was promised and not delivered, despite what some in the UFO su...

Inquiry and Confirmation.

Image
Greetings. Inquiry. Why is such a simple, yet essential course of action so often pushed back against? The UFO subculture has a long "storied" history of alleged witnesses and whistleblowers offering up unsubstantiated claims, statements which never end up being confirmed by tangible proof or evidence. Before moving forward, it must be made clear that my own opinions about the individuals named here are of no importance, nor are my opinions the focus of this blog posting. The process of inquiry and confirmation is the sole focus of this writing.  The process of inquiry, examination, and eventual confirmation involves the asking of questions, and the search for proof and evidence to validate the claims in question. The process is used in many diverse fields as a way to push away from the invalid or misleading and to embrace the confirmed and the defensible. Law enforcement officials practice such techniques. Attorneys practice such techniques. Scientists practice such techniqu...

Credulousness.

Image
Greetings. Throwing caution to the wind. Is the UFO subculture guilty of that particular transgression? Yes, it is. The UFO subculture has always had an unfortunate penchant for believing at face value, regardless of any red flags, regardless of the individual making the claims or statements. Recent events have shown that the situation has not changed in the least. The discussions surrounding the UFO topic have been spirited and engaging, especially in the past few months, but is anyone stopping to process and consider what is being offered to the public? Is anyone taking into account the credibility, reliability, and motivations of those making the affirmations? I ask the questions because they should be asked, and not for any other reasons. Luis Elizondo, Jeremy Corbell, Steven Greer, Jaime Maussan, Steven Greer, George Knapp, Linda Moulton Howe. The list is lengthy and impressive. The notoriety of the people on the list is well-established, with a few having been active in the UFO s...

Questionable Perceptions.

Image
Greetings. Perception is often reality. That saying goes back decades, and it certainly applies to the UFO subculture.  The UFO subculture, like many other "communities," has a mishmash of members, some having a level of notoriety, some having a level of infamy, while others are known only by those who are behind the scenes. In today's world of social media and networking, self-promotion has become easy, self-inflicted wounds being just as easy to procure. The image attached to this particular blog posting is a case in point. Richard Dolan and Jaime Maussan. Two well-known people in the UFO subculture, Mr. Dolan having a well-earned reputation for quality research, Mr. Maussan being a well-known promoter of hoaxes and nonsensical content. On the surface, the image is simply a harmless photograph likely taken during a UFO event, but a deeper examination reveals some troubling potentialities. When a well-respected person is seen with a person whose reputation is less than d...

A Loss the UFO Subculture has Never Overcome.

Image
Greetings. Dr. James E. McDonald.  The gentleman's name is synonymous with the scientific method, and its application to UFO research and investigations. Dr. McDonald was a senior physicist at the Institute for Atmospheric Physics and a professor of meteorology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. His educational credentials are beyond compare, with a B.A. in chemistry from the University of Omaha, a M.S. in meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in physics from Iowa State University. Case closed. Dr. McDonald is perhaps best-known for his work on the UFO problem, starting with a public discussion which occurred in Washington, D.C. on October 5th of 1966 before the American Meteorological Society. His groundbreaking lecture, entitled "The Problem of UFOs," advocated for a scientific examination of the UFO issue, directed at what he termed as "unknowns." During the course of his investigative work on UFOs, Dr. McDonald found th...

Conversations.

Image
Greetings. The UFO topic is the subject of much discussion nowadays. Let's take a look at the situation. In past decades, the UFO topic was only occasionally discussed, and usually during sweeps week on local television channels, with only a few stories appearing on the national broadcast media outlets. Now that has changed, and the change has been quite interesting, and in my humble opinion, very productive.  I can vividly recall a time when the usual UFO story was set to the theme music of "The X-Files," segments which ended up being made light of, courtesy of the news personalities taking part. The news articles were invariably about a misidentified blimp, drone, or some other mundane event or phenomena. Serious articles about UFOs remained rare, and were certainly out of the ordinary. In my years of researching the UFO problem, I have watched hours of old interviews, some with witnesses, some with the major players in the UFO subculture at the time. The late Mike Wall...

Upsetting? Deal with the Necessary Issues.

Image
Greetings. Why are some people unwilling to be uncomfortable? Why are some individuals not willing to entertain other points of view? I have no idea, but it is a topic that should be delved into. Off we go again.... The comments left behind on my blog platform on Facebook are always interesting, whether or not I agree with my readers' opinion. I count myself extremely lucky to have so many intelligent and thoughtful people reading and commenting on my blog writeups. Their contributions are a consistent source of inspiration, and I am always learning with them, and from them. The December 1st blog I wrote on this platform about the recent activities of Mr. Richard Dolan, entitled "Dolan and the Spotlight," the link available at https://williamgpullin.blogspot.com/2023/12/dolan-and-spotlight.html , collected quite a number of comments after I shared it on my Facebook platform. A couple of noteworthy comments were left by Mr. Shawn Porter, pictured above. His first comment r...

A More Accurate Representation, Without the Chaff

Image
Greetings. UFO sighting reports have been collected for decades, with some flaps, waves, and patterns having been discerned from the available information.  However, are the flaps, waves, and patterns that have been discerned by UFO investigators accurate? Let's take a different look at the available information.... Are UFO investigators drawing conclusions from the raw information? It seems so. In my humble opinion, UFO investigators should be drawing conclusions only from those cases that have been properly investigatived, and only those that have either remained unexplained, or have anomalous characteristics.  UFO researchers often make statements like "This is a UFO hotspot," or "Hundreds of cases have been reported in the area," or the dreaded "There were thousands of cases that year." All those statements can be misleading, especially if legitimate and scientifically minded investigations have not been conducted. Take the "thousands of cases...

Spinning the Bassett Wheels.

Image
Greetings. Steven Bassett. Perhaps the best-known individual in the so-called "disclosure movement."  Mr. Bassett has been actively lobbying for disclosure for decades, with no success. His dedication to the effort is to be applauded and is worthy of our full support, but that is besides the point of this writeup. Mr. Bassett has made some statements concerning disclosure, affirmations that did not come to pass. Back on May 23rd of 2016, Mr. Bassett made the following statements during the course of an interview with the British Express. His statements read as follows, and I quote: "We are going to get disclosure this year. I am not sure who will win the election, but I think Obama will be the disclosure president. He will be looking at a Nobel Prize for making an announcement like that. I am 85 percent sure Obama will make the announcement before he leaves office and within days your Prime Minister David Cameron will follow."  Mr. Bassett also stated that "ET ...

Dolan and the Spotlight.

Image
Greetings. The lure of the spotlight, of celebrity, of fame and notoriety is powerful. It has led many a researcher away from legitimate work and into the clutches of the UFO entertainment industry. Richard Dolan seems to be going down that nauseating road.  Richard Dolan was once one of the most well-respected researchers of the UFO problem on the planet. Mr. Dolan's work was once meticulous and dispassionate (to borrow a term from my friend Kevin Randle,) squarely focused on the valid, the provable, and the defensible. Now that has begun to slowly transform.  A posting from November 31st on his Facebook account advertised his program's newest edition, with the post reading as follows, and I quote: "Revisiting the Alien Interview Video | Richard Dolan Show Join Richard Dolan and special guest Jon Stewart as they delve into one of the most controversial videos in the history of ufology - the infamous alien interview video. Allegedly recorded in 1991 and released in 1997, t...
