That's Rich Mr. Powell.
Greetings. Mr. Robert Powell, an Executive Board Member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies, recently wrote a response to the recently released AARO report, published just this morning on X (Twitter.)
The details of Mr. Powell's piece are not really important, although it must be said that the opinion piece is a lengthy and very well-constructed writeup that accurately conveys his thoughts on the AARO report. I do not agree at all with Mr. Powell's opinions or conclusions, but that is not the focus of this particular blog posting.
The focus of this writeup is one particular statement that Mr. Powell made in his opinion piece. The statement reads, and I quote, "There is a tendency in the AARO paper to pull the data that supports the AARO position and leave out the data that might argue against it." You read that right. Mr. Powell is stating that AARO embraced information that supports its paper, and pushed away from data that may support contrary conclusions. That's rich!! The entire UFO subculture, including the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies, does the exact same thing. It is human nature to embrace information that tends to confirm one's own belief structures, to deny it is not an honest assessment of the human condition. Mr. Powell picked on many details of the AARO report, which is the exact thing that he charges AARO of doing. Hypocritical, plain and simple.
Objectivity is the ultimate intention of any legitimate scientific examination, a goal that is often not attained by researchers and investigators, even scientists. I have never attained objectivity in my time, nor will I ever achieve such a lofty target, however, I do take great pains to not make hypocritical comments, for such statements are indefensible in nature, and place one's own objectivity firmly in some serious doubt. Mr. Powell's statement is one such hypocritical comment. UFO authors, archivists, and investigators are all guilty of such unconscious biases at one time or another, for nobody is perfect, nor are any of us truly objective or dispassionate. We are all biased, bipedal, imperfect hominids.
Our opinions and thoughts on different topics are important, as are the resulting conversations. We can all agree to disagree, and still use objective, critical thinking skills along the way. Objectivity, objectivity, objectivity.
