Investigative Scientific "Integrity:" Unethical Behavior in the UFO Subculture.

Greetings. Investigative scientific integrity. The dogged adherence to a set methodology, a highly professional course of action, or actions, which allow for an unbiased, legitimate, and dispassionate examination of an alleged event, or of an alleged witnesses' testimonial.

Scientific integrity is the condition which results from the strict and unwavering adherence to professional values, practices, and methodologies when conducting scientific activities that ensures clarity, objectivity, and reproducibility, while providing unassailable insulation from bias, fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, inappropriate influence(s,) political interference, and censorship.

Quite a mouthful, but an essential one without question.

Investigative integrity, in my humble opinion, involves a far more personal set of ethics, standards, and methodologies. Maintaining one's own investigative integrity involves conducting one's self with honor, honesty, and distinction. It demands that the individual avoid the pitfalls so often at play on the field; fame, celebrity, notoriety, and self-absorption. It demands a high level of ethical behavior.

In the UFO subculture, that bastion of steamy excrement, both forms of integrity are often cast aside, often abandoned without a care, seemingly without a second thought. How many times do UFO investigators embrace or consistently discuss historical cases that have been determined, on multiple occasions by independent researchers, to be hoaxes? Far too many times. Jacques Vallee continues to talk about the Trinity crash story, a tale which is a complete hoax. As a result, Mr. Vallee has lost all of the credibility that he had acquired over his decades of work on the UFO problem. All gone, and flushed down the ufological toilet to oblivion. Richard Dolan continues to spout on about the Aztec, New Mexico case from March of 1948, another historical hoax that has been kept alive and kicking by Scott and Suzanne Ramsey, the late William S. Steinman, and the late Stanton T. Friedman. Mr. Dolan has become a joke, a celebrity, an embarrassment, and nothing more than that. Daniel Alan Jones continues to make a "career" out of the Aurora, Texas case from April 17th of 1897, despite the total wanting of any evidence that the legendary story is based on an event that actually took place. Fortunately, Mr. Jones does have his science-fiction sensibility intact, complete with lighted glasses and high-top sneakers. What a mortifying vision.

Now we arrive at the summit, the very top of the excrement pile; "Contact in the Desert." Will any peer-reviewed papers he presented? No. Will any scientific findings and the evidence to support them be presented? No. Will anything of substance come to light for public scrutiny? No. The entire event will be a laughable exercise in talk, talk, talk, and unabashed self-promotion. Nick Pope, Ross Coulthart, George Knapp, the aforementioned Richard Dolan, Jimmy Church, Robert Salas, Peter Robbins, and other UFO celebrities will all be there, to peddle their wares and merchandise, with their professional ethics and integrity nowhere in sight. How far the UFO field has fallen.

Has the lure of fame and celebrity become all encompassing? What happened to personal and professional integrity? Why have some people in the UFO subculture embraced the nonsensical and pushed away from the valid, the defensible, and the verifiable? Is the lure of the UFO social club really that strong?

I don't have the answers, but I do have my suspicions, and my suspicions don't involve anything that could be seen as ethical behavior. The current situation has become quite odoriferous.

Despite the current state of the UFO subculture, there are some highly credentialed individuals involved in exploring the UFO problem, and it is no coincidence that they are not overly well-known, nor are they a part of the ufotainment industry. People like Jan Aldrich, Dennis Balthasar, Jack Brewer, James Clarkson, Barry Greenwood, David Marler, Kevin D. Randle, and Donald R. Schmitt, among a few others whose names escape me as of this particular writing. They have not abandoned their personal or professional integrity, they call out historical hoaxes when they see them, and they are not distracted by fame, notoriety, or celebrity. They are all deserving of our full support!

Kevin D. Randle has written several articles about the Trinity hoax which can be found on his outstanding blog platform "A Different Perspective," and are available at the following links:
